Isolation of Cryptococcus neoformans and other opportunistic fungi from pigeon droppings
BACKGROUND Invasive fungal infections cause considerable morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised hosts. Pigeon droppings could especially be a potential carrier in the spread of pathogenic yeasts and mold fungi into the environment. The objective of this study was to isolation of Cryptococcus neoformans and other opportunistic fungi from pigeon droppings. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundre...
full textIsolation of Cryptococcus neoformans from pigeon droppings in Ahwaz, Iran
C. neoformans is a basidiomycetous, yeast-like fungus that, following inhalation from an environmental source, causes respiratory and neurological infection in humans and animals. This fungus has 5 serotypes (A, B, C, D, and AD), and recently was subdivided into 3 varieties known as C. neoformans var. grubii (serotype A), C. neoformans var. neoformans (serotype D), and C. neoformans var. gattii...
full textDNA typing suggests pigeon droppings as a source of pathogenic Cryptococcus neoformans serotype D.
The unusual proportion of serotype D strains of Cryptococcus neoformans infecting patients diagnosed with cryptococcosis in some parts of France prompted the analysis of DNA fingerprints obtained with 26 clinical and 29 environmental isolates from the same area. Our results suggest that pigeon droppings are a potential source of pathogenic strains of C. neoformans serotype D, as previously demo...
full textIn vitro antifungal susceptibilities of Cryptococcus neoformans from pigeon droppings, cats, and human sources in Bangkok, Thailand
Introduction Cryptococcus neoformans has emerged as a clinically important opportunistic pathogen worldwide due to the AIDS pandemic. This pathogenic yeast causes pulmonary and systemic cryptococcosis in immucompromised human and susceptible animals such as cats and dogs (8, 10). C. neoformans is globally distributed and found to associate with soil, pigeon excreta, and decaying wood. Cryptococ...
full textIsolation and molecular characterization of Cryptococcus species isolated from pigeon nests and Eucalyptus trees
Background and Purpose: Cryptococcus species are pathogenic and non-pathogenic basidiomycete yeasts that are found widely in the environment. Based on phenotypic methods, this genus has many species; however, its taxonomy is presently being re- evaluated by modern techniques. The Cryptococcus species complex includes two sibling taxa of Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii. We aimed ...
full textISOLATION OF Cryptococcus neoformans FROM ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLES COLLECTED IN SOUTHEASTERN NIGERIA.
Cryptococcosis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans is the second most common fungal opportunistic pathogen and a life-threatening infection with serious clinical manifestations especially in HIV/AIDS and other immunocompromised patients. In Nigeria, HIV/AIDS infection has reached an alarming level. Despite this, information on the presence of this fungus in clinical and environmental samples is v...
